What the 2026 Car Loan Awards Mean for Australian Buyers

Smaller lenders, green finance and total loan cost are reshaping the search for better value

The latest 2026 personal and car loan awards from Mozo point to a clear message for Australian motorists: the lowest-cost car finance may not come from the lender you already bank with.
The awards assessed hundreds of personal and vehicle loan products across dozens of lenders, with categories covering new car loans, used car loans, secured personal loans, excellent-credit borrowers and green car finance.

For buyers, the standout lesson is that smaller banks, customer-owned institutions and specialist lenders continue to compete strongly against the major banks. IMB Bank was named the overall personal loans winner, while the car loan category featured a wide range of lenders including IMB Bank, UniBank, Greater Bank, Teachers Mutual Bank, Police Credit Union, Queensland Country Bank and others. That breadth matters because car finance pricing can vary sharply depending on the borrower, the vehicle, the loan structure and the fees attached.

This is especially relevant in a higher-rate environment. With the cash rate sitting at 4.35% after the Reserve Bank’s June pause, many households are already juggling mortgage, rent, fuel, insurance and grocery costs. A small difference in interest rate may look minor at first glance, but over a five-year term it can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the total amount repaid.

The awards also reinforce why buyers should look beyond the advertised headline rate. A loan with a tempting interest rate can still be poor value if establishment fees, monthly charges or early payout costs are high. The comparison rate is a better starting point because it rolls many mandatory costs into a single annual percentage figure, although it still needs to be checked against your actual loan amount and term.

Green car loans remain another area to watch. Several lenders now offer discounted products for eligible electric, plug-in hybrid or low-emission vehicles. For buyers already considering an EV or efficient hybrid, this can improve affordability and narrow the gap between a conventional vehicle and a cleaner alternative.

Before applying, buyers should:

  • Check whether the car will qualify as security for a secured loan.
  • Compare the comparison rate, not just the advertised rate.
  • Ask whether fees change for used cars, private sales or older vehicles.
  • Use a car loan calculator to test repayments across different terms.
  • Compare car loan options before committing to a single lender.

The takeaway is simple: awards can highlight strong-value lenders, but the best car loan for one borrower may not be the best for another. Your income, credit profile, deposit, vehicle age and repayment goals all influence what a lender may offer. A careful comparison remains the smartest first step.

The Reserve Bank of Australia's latest decision to leave the cash rate unchanged keeps car buyers in a familiar holding pattern: borrowing costs are not rising sharply, but they are not easing quickly either. For households planning a new or used vehicle purchase, that means the focus should remain on preparation, comparison and affordability rather than waiting for a dramatic rate shift. - read more
